They always say “do what you love” but I also think it is important to love where you do it! And I do! Despite the politics, the crime rate, the potholes, the hurricanes, and the sewerage and water board, there is a reason why New Orleanians are still living in New Orleans. And I believe those that just spent the weekend here finally figured out why.
It was an absolute joy to watch people of all ages, from so many different places, enjoying a city that the locals know is so much more than what is sometimes shown on a national platform. A lot has been discussed in terms of the money that was brought to the city over the Super Bowl week/weekend and the money that was spent to attract the masses. While that is, without a doubt, significant, I believe the more significant piece of the experience was getting to feature who we know we really are. We were given the opportunity to show our friendliness, sense of community, absolute superb musical talent, food that is beyond comparison, and the overall festive atmosphere accompanied by endless cocktails, if you so desire.
From the packed images of Bourbon Street to the impromptu concerts that were taking place at several bars throughout the downtown area, we showcased the best parts of the city, which had nothing to do with the money spent or received. The locals were creating those moments and showing our guests what we are all about – enjoying life, good food, good conversation and smooth dance moves all while treating everyone like we’ve known them for years.
Among the amazing press that some of our local bars, restaurants and businesses received were the six pizza joints that were reviewed by Dave Portnoy of Bar Stool Sports in his notorious “One Bite” challenge! Shout out to those featured hotspots and their amazing ratings which “puts New Orleans on the map” for something that Dave says he would not have thought we’d be known for; Pizza! (Just for reference for the locals: Zees Pizzeria – 7.8/ Forbidden Pizza – 8.3/ Tower of Pizza – 7.5/ St. Pizza - 7.8/ Thats Amore Pizza - 7.4/ Gios Pizza - 7.6)
The outpour of love and support for our city was so refreshing, but the most significant reaction to the wedding planner in me came via an Instagram message sent to me from one of my favorite wedding dress designers, Hayley Paige. She said “New Orleans was an absolute blast and I only have good things to say. The overall vibe was very welcoming and happy!”
She threw a special shout out to Crescent City Steaks and Old Absinthe House; two local spots that I know none of us are surprised to hear were absolute perfection!!!
In the end, at the core of who we are, we are hosts! And host we did, complete with a good ole fashion parade! I admit that I watched the parade from my house in Lakeview and laughed hysterically at the reactions of the people who were experiencing a parade in New Orleans for the first time. They were so happy and excited to see the floats, sure, but more than that, they got a taste of our amazing marching bands, dance troops and Mardi gras favorites that have graced our parade routes for years! What’s more is that the country got a front row seat to just a small portion of the talent that New Orleans has living here, learning here, performing here, and entertaining here every single day. The Soul Rebels, Southern University Human Jukebox, The Dancing Dolls, The Original Pinettes Brass Band, and The Spirit of New Orleans Gospel Choir, just to name only a few.
For most locals, we forget about the spirit and culture that we live amongst every day, but for me, I depend on it when my clients are hosting their events sometimes using the same talent that we saw in the pregame show or the same restaurants that these celebrities raved about. I depend on New Orleans showing up every day to host the locals and the tourists whether it is having brunch at Galatoire’s the Friday before Christmas or having a wedding party in the Davenport lounge on a Saturday. I have come to depend on the grace, humility, energy, inclusiveness, uniqueness and hospitality that the world now knows that we have always had and strive to maintain. Great job New Orleans! You did us proud!
